Sri Lanka’s Hangman Sacked

Prison Authorities said that the two newly recruited hangmen have been sacked.

They have been sacked for unauthorized leave of absence.

The post of hangman had been vacant for some time and two were selected and trained out of about 175 applications.

It is not clear if a new appointment will be made in the near future.

Sri Lanka least 480 people convicted of murder an Sri Lanka hasn’t hanged a man in 35 years.

Although suspended in 1977 capital punishment remains in the statute books.

In recent years there has been an alarming increase of murder, drug offences and rape and the appointments of hangman was made as a statement that the government is serious in tackling crime.

Hangings were first introduced in 1884 under British colonial rule.
