While not mentioning the name of the Buddhist organization in the statement, Mobitel said in a web posting that making the ringback tone available does not mean that Mobitel supports the views on the content or the content owner.
“It is with great concern that Mobitel humbly apologizes for causing any emotional distress towards its customers and citizens of Sri Lanka with regards to the events that transpired within the last few days with regards to one of its ringback tones,” the statement said.
The Bodu Bala Sena had recently announced that the ringback tone on Mobitel, if downloaded by Mobitel users, will help fund the Bodu Bala Sena organization.
However the Mobitel statement says the ringback tone, like any other tone provided to Mobitel, is based on a revenue sharing method between the content provider and Mobitel.
Mobitel insists that it is not funding any organization through the ringback tone or the work of such organization.
“We wish to clarify that as the National Mobile Service Provider we are fully committed to uphold the true values of unity and ethnic harmony amongst the people of Sri Lanka,” Mobitel said.
The announcement by the Bodu Bala Sena that the ringback tone by Mobitel will help fund the organization drew a huge outcry among the general public.
