Many fishermen have complained that they were unaware of the stormy situation that developed in the southern coast on Saturday.

The meteorological Department has denided allegations and said that they warned the fisherman and some of them went in to the sea knowing of the dangers.

The Colombo Gazette reported that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought an explanation from Dissaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on how the public was informed about the impending storm on Friday night, the government information department said today.

The death toll from the storm began to rise today after fishermen, who had gone out to sea on Friday as they were not alerted, got caught in rough sea conditions.

The government said that 18 fishermen have now been killed and Over 30 fishermen are missing.

Several fishing boats were damaged as a result of the disaster.
