Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Vaas Gunawardena has been arrested over the murder of a businessman from Bambalapitiya.
The DIG was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department after he was extensively questioned this evening over the incident.
The CID has also questioned DIG Vass Gunawardena last week over the incident.
Mohammed Shyam, 35, a businessman involved in the footwear industry residing at Sagara Road in Bambalapitiya was killed on 22 May.
His body was found in Dompe after he was reported missing.
Four members of the Special Unit operating under DIG Gunawardena have already been placed under arrest by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). According to police sources, hundreds of thousands of rupees had exchanged hands in connection with the murder, which took place on 23 May.
Sources confided the same Unit had been involved in tracing the perpetrators of Kotakethana, Kahawatta serial killings. The unit was also deployed to crack down on the underworld groups in Colombo and the South of Sri Lanka.
