Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has rubbished the allegations raised against him over the break-in at the Bambalapitiya residence of journalist Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema.

Some websites had alleged that the men who forced their way into Abeywickrema’s house had been looking for some files involving MP Namal Rajapaksa.

While the police insist that the men were part of a robber gang, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and others have been quoted as saying it was not a mere robbery attempt.

However MP Namal Rajapaksa denied he had any involvement in the incident and that an intelligent person would not believe such rumours.

“The pen is mightier than the sword. Unfortunately one can write any fictitious story and spread any rumour but it is for the intelligent mind to believe so otherwise,” MP Rajapaksa told the Colombo Gazette.

Meanwhile Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and its partner organization, Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS) called upon the head of United Nations human rights body visiting Sri Lanka to be uncompromising in her search for accountability on grave crimes committed against journalists and media freedom including on the incident involving journalist Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem (Navi) Pillay commenced her weeklong visit on the 25th of August to Sri Lanka which is on the Reporters Without Borders lists of “countries under surveillance” and ranked 162nd out of 179 countries in the 2013 Reporters Without Borders press freedom index. (Colombo gazette)
